International breakthrough for INUPLAN A/S

The Greenland consulting engineering firm proactive investment in environmental department is now paying off. In collaboration with a Canadian company INUPLAN A/S has won a contract about environmental assessment for Maersk Oil.

INUPLAN A/S has become an attractive partner for foreign companies operating within the oil and mineral exploration in Greenland. A year ago INUPLAN invested heavily in creating a new environmental department that was staffed by four environmental advisers - without any contract on hand.

"We did this to establish and develop the skills that we predicted would be demanded by the international groups, but also demanded by public administrations and authorities," says director Kristian Lennert. "We used amounts from our surpluses in the past years to be ready when the demand came. If a local business will be considered for the demanding task for the next growth industries, it can’t wait to upgrade their skills to when specific tasks arise. Then it is too late. Such a professional organization such as Maersk Oil must have full confidence that the necessary expertise is available from day one and it takes as all know, time to build. We have now spent that time and the necessary resources and have got at a good result. In return a professional company as Maersk Oil emphasis on working with a locally based company, if you can document the stability, experience and competencies as well as organizational and financial strength.

A contract with great prospects.

As a small company in global views we can’t conclude direct contracts with Maersk Oil yet, but in cooperation with Golder Associates from Canada, we have won a contract in which we in the coming months will conduct a thorough environmental assessment of Maersk's planned 3D seismic surveys. The seismic survey is part of the company's future exploration activities in a large area located west of Tasiusaq and Nuussuaq in Upernavik district. We must, among other things describe hunting and fishing conditions and the wildlife in the area. This environmental assessment aims to identify possible adverse effects of future exploration and proposals to remedy these. The assessment will be sent in public hearing.

We consider this contract as a big appreciation and recognition of our company's many years work in Greenland. Yes, it may well be regarded as recognition for the entire consulting industry in the country. If INUPLAN A/S solves this task well, we can look forward to more similar tasks. This will provide a big boost in several ways. It will help to raise the level of and build competence in environmental matters in Greenland. This will ensure local anchorage of valuable knowledge. And finally it is my hope that the cooperation with Maersk Oil will make more young people wants to educate themselves in the industry," says Kristian Lennert.
